synopsis
The Hartings follows Denis through a journey marked by his tremendous successes and apparent failures. As the story unfolds we experience his singing career bounce between rush hour performances at the Guy/Concordia Metro to standing ovations at the Apollo theatre. His spiritual philosophies keep him afloat as he continues to follow his dream of being independent from the crutches society offers him. In an attempt to aid his journey Denis’ manager and former life partner, Peggy Roux, also a blind Quebecoise, pushes and pulls Denis through his possibly bleak and unpredictable future. Throughout the film it is confirmed with compelling performances of his blind twelve-year-old daughter Lauviah Harting, that music has the power not only to heal but to overcome all obstacles.Together they experience the daily challenge and risk of trusting strangers to get them where they need to go. It is through this trust that they continue to have hope after a series of devastating losses, namely the death of their son three years ago who drowned while in the supervision of a municipal daycare. A family who continues to resolve their perpetual drama through their intimate relationships with music, love and every day survival, The Hartings takes us through a pinnacle point in one man's life marked by blindness but saturated with vision.
